CHAPTER EIGHTEEN

DANA

I’m sitting in the bath. The mirror that covers the wall is steamed up. My skin has turned pink from scrubbing it. I keep hearing the gunshot over and over in my mind. I rest my head on my knees as I keep replaying that moment in the forest when I thought Cillian had handed me over to the enemy.

He hadn’t.

A knock at the door is quickly followed by Cillian stepping into the bathroom. I pull my legs closer to my chest, very aware that I’m naked.

He’s washed too. His dark hair is damp. Cillian is always confident, but right now he appears unsure as he walks over to a stack of towels and picks one up. I want to ask him what he’s doing, but if I start talking, I’m sure nothing good will come from it.

He holds the towel wide and close to the bath and turns his head away. The water is almost cold, and I’m wondering how long I’ve been there. The room is warm as I stand up. I pause, but Cillian keeps his eyes diverted as I step out of the water. The towel is warm that he wraps around me, and once he has it tightly around me, he walks over to the stack of towels. I fix the large one on me and tighten it at the front. The second towel is smaller, and Cillian doesn’t hand it to me but picks up strands of my hair and starts to dry the long tendrils. He moves around me, and his gentleness is almost painful.

“You hesitated,” I find myself saying.

His hands pause. “My sister, Aoibhe, was kidnapped by the Russians. I’ve been trying to get her back for a long time. So when they offered her back to me…”

I turn so I can see him. “Jesus, Cillian.” I want to tell him that he should have made the exchange, but I’m glad I didn’t end up in their hands. “I’m so sorry.”

Cillian touches my face, but the crushing pain in his gaze nearly undoes me. “I hesitated,” he whispers. “But I couldn’t.” He drops his hand.

“What about Richard or Shay? Or my dad. Can’t they help?”

Cillian’s gaze is zapped of any pain, and his eyes grow hard. “Your dad is helping me in exchange for keeping you safe.”

I nod. “That’s good.” But it doesn’t look like Cillian thinks so. His jaw is tight, and I reach up and touch his face. “What can I do?” I ask.

“Nothing, Dana.” I see the monster lurking behind Cillian’s eyes. I don’t want to see him in pain.

I have no idea how all this works, but the next time I speak to my father, I will make sure he’s doing everything he can.

Cillian returns to drying my hair, and I let him. His fingers brush my shoulders and the back of my neck. The contact sends shivers across my skin. After a few light touches of his hand, I start to think it might not be an accident.
